Much like the First Nations’ languages of British Columbia, Japan is also home to several endangered languages identified by UNESCO. Based on research in progress at Okinawa’s University of the Ryukyus, a Canadian martial artist and resident of Okinawa will demonstrate how indigenous Okinawan languages are and could be used in karate and kobudo practice as both an innovative form of language revitalization and an effective means of teaching key Okinawan martial arts concepts.
