Jouji Nakata, a highly prolific Japanese voice actor, joined Anime Revolution 2012. His notable roles include Alucard (HELLSING), Corporal Giroro (Sgt. Frog), Kirei Kotomine (Fate/stay night), The Count of Monte Cristo (Gankutsuou), Hody Jones (One Piece), Diethard Reid (Code Geass), and many more.

Mr. Nakata sat down with us in his first Canadian convention and gave us an exclusive interview.

AR: I’m sitting with Nakata Jouji
JN: Hello everyone!
AR: My name is Sean Kim.
JN: Oh, you (have) good Japanese speaking!
AR: Thank you!

AR: So, Nakata Jouji, how long have you been doing voice acting?
JN: Yeah, about 25 (years)?
AR: 25 years?
JN: Yeah.
AR: Wow, that’s a long time.
JN: But, I have done acting before that too, so if I combined that, it would be about 30 years.
JN: Do you know Tokusatsu? (note: live action films/TV drama that contains heavy use of special effects, usually featuring superheroes)
AR: Tokusatsu? No, I don’t.
JN: Sentai-mono? (note: series of Japanese superhero drama, known to be the source material for Power Rangers)
AR: Oh, yes! You’ve done that?
JN: Yes. Warui (evil) bosses.
AR: OK, wow, that’s amazing.

AR: So, I know you’ve done various anime, Japanese anime. Could you do some voices from some of them?
JN: Oh, what do you want? (chuckling)
AR: Should we try Hellsing?
JN: Yes, yes… Your orders, my master. Seras, come with me. OK?
AR: That was great.
AR: And how about from One Piece?
JN: One Piece? OK… (distinctive laugh from the character, Hody Jones) Straw Hat! Prepare yourself.
JN: He’s (a) very tough guy.
AR: Wow.
JN: Hody Jones, do you know Hody Jones?
AR: Yes, Hody Jones.
JN: Thank you.
AR: Wow, that was really great.

AR: So, how are you enjoying this, Anime Revolution?
JN: Well, this is my first time. First time coming to Vancouver, and first time participating in Anime Revolution as well. Everyone was so welcoming, and the city is so close to the sea as well as the mountains. It’s surrounded by nature, but it’s also modern, which I think is nice.
JN: Do you like Vancouver?
AR: I love Vancouver. I was born here.
JN: Yeah?
AR: Yeah, it’s really great.
AR: I actually wanted to go to Japan.
JN: Oh?
AR: I want to, but not yet.
JN: Not yet?
AR: Not yet.
JN: Come, come, come!
AR: Yeah, I will, soon.
AR: So, will you be coming to Anime Revolution, if they have it next year?
JN: If you want me back, any time!
AR: Oh I think we will.
JN: However, I had to miss out on (some recordings for) regular roles, so that was a bit difficult.
AR: Right, OK.
JN: But, if you all have someone you would like to see come (to AR), I will tell them “Anime Revolution’s great, it’s fun, you should go!” Do you have any requests (for guests)?
AR: I think we would love that.

AR: And lastly, what was your favourite part of Anime Revolution 2012?
JN: So, normally at an event in Japan, I’m far away from fans, there’s a distance. So really, talking directly with them, or doing autographs in such proximity, there aren’t many opportunities (to do so). This time, I was able to get close and talk to them, take photos with them, and do some handshakes with them, that left me a strong impression. Also, there were people doing cosplay in my hotel, you walk around the city and you see people in cosplay, so how should I say this… everyone has this attitude that they want to have fun, and I can feel that. I think that is also fantastic. At a place like this, I wouldn’t mind doing it. I wouldn’t mind doing something.
AR: I think we would love to have you cosplay.
JN: Thank you.
AR: Well, thank you for joining us. Thank you very much.
JN: Thank you very much, the pleasure is mine.

NJ: Oh, you (have) good Japanese speaking!

NJ: Yeah, about 25 (years)?
NJ: Yeah.
NJ: Do you know Tokusatsu?(特撮はご存知ですか?)
NJ: Sentai-mono?

NJ: Oh, what do you want?(ええ、どういったものをやりましょうか。)
NJ: Yes, yes…
NJ: ONE PIECE? OK… 「
NJ: He’s (a) very tough guy.
NJ: Hody Jones, do you know Hody Jones?
NJ: Thank you.

NJ: Yeah?
NJ: Not yet?(まだですか。)
NJ: Come, come, come!

NJ: Thank you.
Bye!
